David Cantwell lives in Kansas City, MO. He writes about popular culture for The New Yorker and for Rolling Stone Country, was a longtime senior editor for the original incarnation of No Depression and was the 2017 winner of the Chet Flippo Award for Excellence in Country Music Journalism, and is the coauthor of Heartaches by the Number: Country Music’s 500 Greatest Singles. He is working too slowly on a revised, expanded edition of his 2013 critical monograph, Merle Haggard: The Running Kind.
