RJ Smith is the author of American Witness: The Art and Life of Robert Frank (2017); The One: The Life and Music of James Brown (2012); The Great Black Way: Los Angeles in the 1940s and the Lost African American Renaissance (2006). He’s written for Spin, Vibe, GQ, The New York Times, and Yeti. He lives in Chicken Corner, California, and is currently writing a book about Chuck Berry in the age of Me Too.
