I.C.Y.M.I.: Dolly Parton is Reading Bedtime Stories to Kids Online

Greetings, fellow pop culture aficionados, and welcome to week eight of our I.C.Y.M.I. (In Case You Missed It) blog series. Our museum may be temporarily closed to visitors based on guidance from public health officials to slow the spread of coronavirus, but we're still here to recap a handful of trending tidbits from the past week in popular culture, in case you missed them.

Last Friday, we highlighted a socially distant Dave Grohl, who had the internet abuzz with true short stories from his life that he was sharing on a newly-created Instagram account. This week, we're sticking to that storytelling theme but moving from one music icon to the another, calling attention to Dolly Parton's latest project, 'Goodnight with Dolly.'

Dolly Parton Reads Bedtime Stories to Kids Online

Musician, philanthropist, and pioneer of the social media platform personality craze, Dolly Parton has launched a weekly series aimed at engaging children and parents while providing "a welcome distraction during a time of unrest" and to "inspire a love of reading and books."

Selecting books from her notable Imagination Library endeavor, Parton reads to an online audience at bedtime. The 'Goodnight with Dolly' series streams weekly on the nonprofit's YouTube channel.

"Dolly hopes this series of stories will provide comfort and reassurance to coping kids and families during the shelter-in-place mandates," Imagination Library says.

The first reading (embedded for you above) took place this past Thursday night with Parton reading 'The Little Engine That Could.' Here's the other books Parton will read as part of the program's 10-week series:

There's a Hole in the Log on the Bottom of the Lake by Loren Long
Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney
I Am a Rainbow by Dolly Parton
Pass It On by Sophy Henn
Stand Tall Molly Lou Mellon by Patty Lovell
Violet the Pilot by Steve Breen
Max & The Tag-Along Moon by Floyd Cooper
Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña
Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton

Quarantine Tunes You Can Use

If you're like me, you appreciate a little lo-fi hip-hop in your life while navigating the workday. Well, props to Nerdist for compiling a handful of instrumentals remixed with some of your favorite music from classic video games like Mario, Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, and more. Having listened to a few while writing this post, they've provided a perfect mix of increased production and relaxed nostalgia. You're welcome in advance!

What To Watch This Weekend

SyFy comes through in the clutch. Just in time for your weekend binge watch, the television channel has made all four seasons plus two movies—'The Plan' and 'The Razor'—of Battlestar Galactica available to watch online for free.

Elsewhere among real internet heroes, Hasbro has released full episodes of the original G.I. Joe cartoon to YouTube, where they're free to watch.

And if you're in the mood for horror, MoPOP's weekly watch-a-long continues at 7 p.m. PT with 'Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn.' Join us on Zoom for pre- and post-film discussion and unique programming, as well as in-film puzzles and activities from our friends at Hourglass Escapes.
