Kiki is 13, which means she must now leave home to become a full-fledged witch. With just her broom and her black cat Jiji, Kiki must learn to make it in a new town. When her witch powers start to falter, Kiki has a crisis of faith. Can she get over her mental block to become the witch she’s meant to be?

Hosted by MoPOP Public Engagement Producer Kasi Gaarenstroom, who will be joined by special guest Hoai-Tran Bui of SlashFilm (learn more about her below!), our final installment in "The Comeback" series exemplifies the uphill battle and unlikely heroes achieving the impossible. After over a year of isolation and untold hardship, we hope "The Comeback" series inspires viewers to reflect on their own comeback stories from the last 18+ months. Whether you got a new job, started a new hobby, or just made it through the pandemic as best as you could, we hope you'll join the watchalong and share your stories with us.
Here’s a handful of program elements that you can expect to see this Saturday, December 18:
- Pre-film introduction with MoPOP’s Kasi Gaarenstroom, plus special guest Hoai-Tran Bui of SlashFilm, who calls Kiki's Delivery Service an essential film
- Chat with Kasi Gaarenstroom, special guest Hoai-Tran Bui, and other Kiki's Delivery Service fans during the film
- Post-film discussion of "The Comeback" theme
As with all of our virtual movie watchalong events, you'll need to register in advance to attend. This program uses a pay-what-you-can ticket model — every little bit helps! All proceeds contribute to MoPOP programming, along with the preservation of our collection and our educational initiatives, all of which support our mission of making creative expression a life-changing force.
After registration, instructions on how to join the program will be e-mailed to you. If you happen to own a copy of the film or are able to rent a physical copy from your local video store, make sure to get it queued up at 6 p.m. PT on Saturday, December 18. Hoai-Tran Bui is a news editor and film critic at SlashFilm. She has written extensively on sci-fi, superheroes, high fantasy, anime, and Asian-American representation in the media, and has written for The Washington Post and USA Today.
